How to play
Getting started
1. Pick a mode — from the Play page: practice against the bot, play locally on the same device with a friend, or find a real opponent online. 2. Pick a variant and speed — International (10×10), English (checkers, 8×8), or Russian (8×8), each with Bullet, Blitz, or Rapid time controls. 3. Make your move — click or tap a piece to see its legal moves highlighted, then click the square you want to move to. If a capture is available, you must take it. 4. Create a free account (Account page) to save your rating, game history, and appear on the leaderboard — you can also just play as a guest without one.
Basic rules, by variant
International draughts — 10×10 board, men capture forward and backward, kings fly any distance along a diagonal, and captures are mandatory — when more than one is available, you must take the one that captures the most pieces.
English draughts (checkers) — 8×8 board, men capture forward only (until crowned), kings move one square at a time in any diagonal direction. Captures are mandatory, but there's no "biggest capture" rule — any legal capture is fine.
Russian draughts — 8×8 board, men capture forward and backward, kings fly any distance. Captures are mandatory but, unlike International, you're free to choose among several available capture sequences.
Ratings & rankings
You have a separate Elo rating for each of the 9 combinations of variant × speed — a strong Blitz rating in International doesn't carry over to Russian Bullet, for example. Ratings update automatically after every rated online game. Games marked "Casual" don't affect your rating, so they're a good way to try a new variant without risk. The Rankings page shows the top players server-wide or filtered to your country; your own rating history over time is on your Profile page.
Frequently asked questions
Why do I have to take a capture? — Draughts rules require capturing when it's available ("forced capture"); the game highlights which pieces can capture so you can't miss it.
Can I undo a move? — No, same as over-the-board play — once you release a piece on a legal square, the move stands. Use Analysis after the game to review what happened.
What happens if I disconnect mid-game? — You have a grace period to reconnect before the game is forfeited on time; a countdown shows on your opponent's screen while you're gone.
How do tournaments work? — Single-elimination brackets, Swiss, and Arena formats are all supported — check the Tournaments page for what's currently open, or start your own.
Why does the leaderboard say it's locked? — It unlocks after you've played your first game, so a brand-new account isn't shown sitting at an unranked spot.
Can I play against the same opponent again? — Yes — challenge them directly from their profile or the Friends page, or add them as a friend first to challenge them any time.
Why did I get matched instantly / why is there no one online? — If no human opponent is found within a short wait, you may be matched with a bot persona so you're never left waiting indefinitely — it plays like, and is rated like, any other opponent.
Friends & challenges
Adding a friend — search for their username from the Friends page and send a request; they'll see it under Pending requests and can accept or decline it.
Challenging someone — from a friend's row, or from their profile, pick "Challenge", choose the variant, speed, and rated/casual, then send it. They'll get a notification (bell icon) to accept or decline.
Removing a friend — use "Remove" next to their name on the Friends page; this doesn't notify them.
Safety & moderation
In-game chat is automatically screened for abusive or profane language — a message that trips the filter is blocked before it's sent, and the sender sees why. If another player is being abusive despite that, you can block them directly from the in-game chat panel; a blocked player can no longer message or challenge you. Repeated reports may lead to account-level restrictions — see the Terms of Service (linked at sign-up) for the full conduct policy.

Skill-based, non-gambling platform. Draughts Arena is a game of skill. Ratings, rankings, and matchmaking reflect playing strength only — no real-money wagering, prizes, or gambling of any kind take place on this platform, and none of the "Rated" games involve staking anything of monetary value.
Age requirement. You must be at least 13 years old (or the minimum age required in your country to use online services without parental consent, if higher) to create an account.
Your account. You're responsible for keeping your login credentials secure and for activity that happens under your account. One account per person; don't impersonate another player or misrepresent your identity. We may ask you to verify your email address, and some account-recovery features (like resetting a forgotten password) depend on having a working email on file.
Fair play. Don't use external engines, scripts, or another person's assistance to determine your moves in rated games, and don't deliberately manipulate ratings (e.g. arranging losses). Accounts found doing this may be restricted.
Conduct and language. Be respectful in chat, display names, bios, and any other content visible to other players. Profanity, slurs, harassment, and hate speech are not allowed anywhere on the platform — messages containing them are blocked automatically before they're even sent, and account details (display name, bio, username) are checked the same way. Repeated attempts to bypass this filter, or abusive conduct that falls outside what an automated filter catches, may lead to a chat restriction, a block by other players, or account action after a report is reviewed.
Reporting and blocking. You can block another player at any time, which stops them from messaging or challenging you — blocking is reversible, you can unblock someone later from Settings. You can also report a player for abusive conduct; reports are reviewed by the people running this server, not automatically actioned.
Content you provide. Profile details (display name, avatar, bio, country) are visible to other players per your visibility settings. Don't upload content you don't have the right to use.
Availability. This is a small, actively-developed project — features, ratings resets, and data storage may change as it evolves. It's provided as-is, without guarantees of uptime or data retention.
Termination. We may suspend or remove an account that violates these terms, at our discretion. You can also request your account be deleted by contacting whoever operates this server.
Changes. These terms may be updated from time to time; continued use of an account after a change means you accept the update.
Privacy Policy
What we collect. Account info you provide (username, email, password — stored as a salted hash, never in plain text), profile details you choose to add (display name, bio, country, avatar), your games, ratings, and rating history, chat messages sent in-game, and friend/block/report relationships with other players.
What we don't collect. No payment or financial information — this platform has no purchases. No tracking cookies, no ad networks, no analytics that follow you across other sites.
How it's used. Solely to run the platform: authenticating you, matching you with opponents, computing ratings, showing your profile and history to other players per your visibility settings, and sending you account-related email (verification, password reset).
Who else sees it. Other players see whatever your profile visibility settings allow (display name, country, ratings, public game history). We use third-party infrastructure to run this service — a database host (for storing the data above), an email delivery provider (only to send you the account emails described above, not for marketing), and an error-monitoring service (which may receive technical details about a crash, such as your username or user ID, to help us fix bugs — never your password or chat content). None of these providers use your data for their own purposes.
Chat messages. In-game chat is automatically screened for abusive language before sending (see Terms of Service) — this screening happens on our own server, not a third party.
How long we keep it. For as long as your account exists. You can request deletion of your account and associated data at any time by contacting whoever operates this server.
Your choices. You can edit or remove most profile fields yourself in Settings. You can block another player, which stops their access to challenging or messaging you. You can request a copy or deletion of your data by contacting the operator.
Children's privacy. This platform is not directed at children under 13 (see the age requirement in the Terms of Service), and we don't knowingly collect data from anyone under that age.
Security. Passwords are hashed, never stored or logged in plain text. Sessions use randomly-generated tokens. We take reasonable technical measures to protect your data, but no online service can guarantee absolute security.
Changes. This policy may be updated from time to time; continued use of an account after a change means you accept the update.
